We are committed to closing the achievement gap for Aboriginal students. We know that we need to learn about, nurture and value the cultural identity of our Aboriginal students in order to assist them to be successful learners.
We welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family members, parents and community members to our school so that we can get to know each other, learn about the local Aboriginal community and develop shared goals and plans for Aboriginal students.
We encourage Aboriginal students to learn how to negotiate and develop strategies by providing unique leadership opportunities.
Corrimal High School has 50 Aboriginal students. Our Aboriginal Education programs acknowledge the crucial role of education in overcoming inequities and and moving towards genuine understanding and reconciliation. All faculties support the Aboriginal focus outlined in the NSW Department of Education and Training Aboriginal Education Policy (1996).
Corrimal High School maintains its focus on literacy, numeracy, attendance and retention for our Aboriginal students. While many students demonstrated improved outcomes in these areas much remains to be done. Norta Norta funding was approved for in class tuition to further address Literacy and Numeracy outcomes as well as to assist students learning is specific subject and content areas.
Further, many of our students are acknowledged by teaching staff with specific Achievement Awards recognising success across a wide range of disciplines.
Corrimal High School is dedicated to ensuring culture remains at the core of lessons and many lessons have now been developed to be utilised in classrooms and outside of classrooms to ensure that everyone has a perspective and voice. Students will receive the utmost support in not only an educational sense but also in a cultural sense instilling the qualities of respect, responsibility and safety.
Students are also supported at Corrimal High School through the NORTA NORTA tutoring program where extra help can be provided to Aboriginal students who have identified a subject area of concern. Personalised Learning Programs are also utilised to assist all staff members in being informed about underlying strengths and weaknesses that a students has identified within their study and assist by re-instilling their goals in classroom. Aboriginal students are supported by the APCEO at Corrimal High School with regular meetings and support.
