The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan 2010-2014 (pdf 4405 KB) requires all NSW Department of Education and Training schools to build competencies in Aboriginal Culture and the recognition of Indigenous perspectives in all educational settings. Partnerships with the Indigenous community, including the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc., Elders and other Aboriginal community groups are very important to all schools.
All schools provide opportunities for all students, staff and the wider community to acquire and develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal history, cultures and experiences. The NSW Department of Education acknowledges the connections between identity, Aboriginal culture and wellbeing and incorporates various programs to build and bridge the connections made in these areas, embedding student well-being approaches to increase student engagement, participation and retention.
At Corrimal High School, we are committed to establishing and building those quality connections with Indigenous community groups. Below are some of the programs we have been involved in this year to maintain cultural awareness:
NAIDOC week celebrations
- Certificates of achievement to Indigenous students.
- Indigenous performers and cultural presentation.
School residency of Monty (Boori) Pryor. Indigenous educator, writer and musician. The focus of the visit is to entertain and immerse the students in Aboriginal culture through traditional dance and music. The importance of literacy and school engagement is emphasised by reading workshops featuring his books.
Indigenous students from the school work with other primary schools during their NAIDOC Week and significant date celebrations and organise other programs to assist younger Aboriginal students.
Further Cultural awareness training is provided to staff through the Jumbulla Aboriginal Education Centre.
Contact established with performing troupe "An Indigenous Experience" who promote Aboriginal culture through music, art and dance on a whole school basis.
No Gaps training to better assist staff.
